Statement of Cardinal Bertone, Secretary of State
ROME, Saturday, September 16, 2006 (ZENIT.org ) - With reactions of various Muslim communities in some parts of Speech of Pope Benedict XVI at Regensburg University , September 12, as part of his trip to Germany, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Secretary of State has issued this Saturday the following statement: * * *
response to reactions from Muslims on certain passages of Speech of Pope Benedict XVI at the University of Regensburg, I wish to add the following clarifications and explanations already made by the Director of the Press Room for the Holy See:
- The Pope's position on Islam is clearly one that is expressed in the conciliar document Nostra Aetate: "The Church regards with esteem also the Muslims, who worship the one God living and subsistent, creator of heaven and earth, who has spoken to men. They seek to comply with all their soul to the decrees of God, though hidden, was subject to God as Abraham, with whom the Islamic faith readily relates. Although they do not acknowledge Jesus as God, they revere Him as a prophet, his virgin Mother they also honor Mary, and sometimes they even call on her with devotion. In addition, they await the Day of Judgement when God will render their deserts all men resurrected. They therefore value the moral life and do they worship God especially through prayer, almsgiving and fasting (n. 3)
- The Pope's option in favor of interreligious and intercultural dialogue is equally clear. During his meeting with representatives of some Muslim communities in Cologne, 20 August 2005, he said that dialogue between Christians and Muslims " can not be reduced to an optional extra, "adding:" The lessons of the past must help us to avoid repeating the same mistakes. We must seek paths of reconciliation and learn to live with respect for each other's identity. "
- As for the opinion of the Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus, whom he quotes in the Regensburg speech, the Holy Father had and has no intention to do his. He simply used it as an opportunity to propose, in a university context and according to the result of a complete and attentive reading of the text, some reflections on the theme of the relationship between religion and violence in general, and conclude with a clear and radical rejection of the religious motivation of violence, wherever it comes. It is worth recalling in this regard what Benedict XVI himself recently affirmed in his Message of the twentieth anniversary commemorative meeting of the Interfaith Prayer for Peace desired by his beloved predecessor John Paul II at Assisi in October 1986 : The "manifestations of violence can not be attributed to religion as such but to the cultural limitations with which it is lived and develops in time. ... Indeed, testimony the close bond that exists between the relationship with God and the ethics of love are recorded in all great religious traditions. "
The Holy Father thus deeply regrets that certain passages of his address could have sounded offensive to the sensibility of Muslim believers and have been interpreted in a way that does not absolutely correspond to his intentions. On the other hand, faced with the fervent religiosity of Muslims, he warned secularized Western culture so that it avoids "the contempt for God and the cynicism that considers mockery of the sacred as a right of freedom" .
In reiterating his respect and esteem for those who profess Islam, he hopes to be helped to understand the correct meaning of his words so that, quickly overcame this difficult time, strengthens the evidence in God one, living and subsistent, creator of heaven and earth, who has spoken to men "and collaboration to" defend and promote together, for all men, social justice, moral values, peace and freedom "( Nostra Aetate, n. 3).
